Last night we celebrated my daughters 4th birthday. She turned four on Thursday and last night we held her party! Long story made short, we had to change our plans for the "theme" of her party twice and did not decide on the final theme until early on in the week. Our final decision on her party theme was... Barbie! Which worked out really well, or so I thought, because I could make cupcakes, and a doll cake using on of her dolls and I could try to make it pretty and not have to pre-order her cake, and since we didn't decide on the theme until late Monday night, this seemingly sounded like a good plan.
I always take the week of her birthday off work, and we usually go somewhere to celebrate, such as the beach, Dollywood, etc... Well this year, because of our work schedules and financial setbacks we decided not to go anywhere, but to have a "Mommy and Pea" day of pampering, (hair, mani/pedis, makeup). It was in all a great day! (this was all Thursday)
On Friday, I spent most of the day, cleaning house, laundry, etc. trying to prepare for her party on Saturday night. At 3pm I decided to start working on her cake. I am not a huge baker but I thought "how hard can this be?" BOY was I WRONG! First, the directions told me to mix one box of mix and pour in the bowl, then bake for ONE HOUR/15 minutes! Wow... wasn't expecting that! After baking, you cool 15 minutes, then remove let cool 3 hours, mix second box, bake 1hr, 15mins. cool 15 mins, remove from bowl, let cool 3 hours. After I pulled the cakes out of the oven, let cool and removed from bowl. We had to leave to attend the birthday party of my niece, who was born just a short 30 hours after Pea was. We partied with Deedee for her birthday, then we came back home to make cupcakes and finish decorating the doll cake.
The first thing I had to do was cut 2 inches of cake from one of the cakes, and assemble the other cake on top, ice and decorate! Sounded simple and it pretty much was, until I went to put the doll in the cake, I wasn't aware, either I didn't see it on the directions, or I didn't think to ask someone who had made this particular cake before, but you are suppose to cut a hole in the cake to slide the barbie down, well, I did not do this! So therefore, when the doll went into the cake the cake cracked! I tried to icing it back together like glue, and that worked until the next morning, then the back of her dress fell completely off the back! I was so upset, I spent 6 hours working on this cake and then it never made it to the party!
Although the cake was a disaster, and I realized very quickly why I usually let my husband do the baking, the party was great! We had lots of family, friends, and church family come over. And even though the cake was crazy looking, it was good, and everyone got a good laugh out of Barbie loosing her butt! :)
